Chapter Wise, Half Book and Full Book Tests: A Revision Plan

Three stacked test papers labelled chapter, half book and full book

Tests are not just for marks. They show you what you actually remember.

The trick is using the right size of test at the right time. Here is how we would schedule it.

Chapter tests: during the term

A chapter test is short and focused. Use it the week you finish a chapter.

It catches gaps early, while the chapter is still fresh. Teachers can run one every week without losing teaching time.

Quarter book papers: every month

After three or four chapters, combine them. A quarter book paper mixes topics, which is closer to a real exam.

Students often do well in single chapter tests and then struggle here. Mixing is harder. That is the point.

Half book papers: mid-year and pre-boards

Half book papers suit mid-year exams and the first round of pre-boards. They are long enough to test stamina.

Full book papers: the final month

Save full book papers for the end. Do them under exam conditions. Use the board pattern paper as your last mock.

A simple calendar for teachers

  • Weekly: one chapter test.
  • Monthly: one quarter book paper.
  • December: first half book paper.
  • February: second half book and two full book papers.

Quick answers

When should I start full book papers?

In the last month before the exam. Before that, chapter tests and half book papers teach you more.

How often should teachers give chapter tests?

Once a week works well. It keeps tests short and catches gaps while the chapter is still fresh.
