FBISE 50% MCQ Pattern: What Changes for Students

Pie chart showing the FBISE paper split into 50 percent MCQs and 50 percent descriptive questions

The Federal Board has changed the paper pattern in five subjects. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science move to half MCQs and half descriptive questions.

Class 9 and 11 move first, from the Second Annual Exam 2026. Class 10 and 12 keep the older pattern until the First Annual Exam 2028. Check the exact dates on the FBISE website.

What it means in practice

Half the marks now come from MCQs. That rewards wide coverage. You need to know every chapter a little, not a few chapters deeply.

Descriptive questions still matter. They are half the paper. Every short and long question now has an OR choice, so you pick one of two. But you cannot afford to skip topics anymore.

How to prepare for more MCQs

  • Read the textbook line by line. MCQs often come from small facts and examples.
  • Do exercise MCQs for every chapter. Then do extra ones.
  • Practise under time. Class 9 papers have 60 MCQs and Class 11 papers have 80. That needs speed.
  • Learn to eliminate wrong options. You will not know every answer.

What teachers should change

Add more MCQs to class tests. A ten question quiz at the start of class works well.

Use chapter tests with a heavy MCQ section. It trains speed and coverage at the same time.
